Crucifix of Comfort +12

Category: Life,Random Thought

So, I spent most of today at the hospital testing out a new ventilator, the ultra sophisticated LTV-1200. For such tests, you get admitted into the ICU as an outpatient. I’m kind of a small fellow, so I usually end up in the pediatric ICU, their hardware is just better suited for me. You know you’re close to the peds ICU when you look up at the ceiling panels and see what I imagine is meant to be cheerful artwork. However, in reality, these hand-painted works of “art” are often astonishingly creepy. For instance, allow me to present the Crucifix of Comfort +12.

Whenever I’m nervous and afraid of my own death, looking up and seeing the brutal device of Christ’s end always makes me feel better.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee…

Sort of of somber for a peds ICU, in particular the accompanying text. You know somebody meant well, but it’s for a kids ward, not death row.

BTW, is the LTV-1200 a volume ventilator?

    Hola Mike,
It’s late. By now I’m usually on Morpheus arms. However, I have finally found your blog. A couple of hours ago I finished watching for the second time an episode of one of my favorite tv series, This American Life. That and Man vs. Wild are probably my two top shows at the moment. I thought I didn’t really have a “favorite” show but I guess I do. In any case, I needed to write you. By now my brain is quite slow, and I could not figure out how to send you a message. My computer doesn’t read your link of send me a message. So, I have just decided to leave a note in your comments.
I have quite several thoughts and feelings that are rushing to me and want to translate into typing. However, I have decided to contain them for a little bit, at least until I can find a way to send you an e-mail or something of the like.
To end this note Mike, I want to thank you. Not as the commonly/socially/polite thank you, no. I would describe it more as a gracias Mike, which comes out with a smile, and with a brief but sincere connection, connection that comes from a second of eye contact.
Gracias for living your life and share it through tv and your writing. For sharing how you feel and what is like to live Mike’s life through Mike’s words. Because through all, I find inspiration; I have been moved by your writing and by your life. I honestly don’t think that what I feel is because of your physical condition, perhaps just puts a hue to it. What it moves me the most is your process on making your life what you want it to be, with the things that you can control, and try to let go of all the things you cannot control. I relate with you on that, is an everyday adventure/struggle, making sense of it all, being the creators of our lives.
    Smiles Mike,
    Sincerely,
    Victoria.

I don’t understand how anyone in their right mind would think that that picture is “comforting”. It’s like that time when I was at the hospital, and this elderly couple came in and prayed over me.

    Newsflash. Not helping.

If you know that the cross is where all your sins were taken away, and that it is the reason that you will receive Jesus’ reward and rather than your own just punishment the moment you die, then that cross is a great comfort.
If you know that Jesus did not stay dead, and that because of what the did on that cross, neither will you, then the cross is a great comfort.
