Hi Mike. When I first read “Catcher in the Rye”, that was the cover of the copy I read. It remains my favorite — even though J.D. Salinger requested that it not have an image on the cover. For years it’s had the sort of flat-color burgundy cover, or similarly non-representational design. Recently I saw a re-issuing of an old cover that has carousel horses on it. My favorite remains the one where Holden Caulfield is seen wandering into Times Square, or whatever part of NY it is. It makes the book feel more personal, more casual. I’m guessing that Salinger wanted the reader to be able to see Holden in their mind rather than have him illustrated on the cover, and I can respect that. But I still like that cover best.

Yeah, it’s a gorgeous book, I’m totally lucky to have it. At a Starbucks in Burbank we met someone reading a burgundy copy, so I ended up getting a picture with that one too.
