Atlas Sucked

Category: Opinions

Save for Anthem, I haven’t read much Ayn Rand, and apparently, I’m not missing anything. According to an excellent article by JF Quackenbush at EricRosenfield.com, Atlas Shrugged is one of the worst books ever written. This, of course, means that I absolutely have to read it, because that’s how I roll.

I shall anticipate more cutting commentary a la “Dune”!

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

    Oh Ziztur, that was classic.

College age, the hottest smartest girl I knew was reading it so I picked it up hoping I’d learn something.

I learned that there were 40,000 other 19 year olds annoying the living shit out of anyone within ear-shot about Ayn Rand, smoking cloves. I did for a short while think I could change the world. Thank god the internet wasn’t around then or it would have been worse (everyone checked out all the Ann Rand books so I didn’t have the chance to go cult). I skimmed it for good parts, that thing was a freakin brick so that was alot of skimming. Eventually, I just said, who the F’cares who John Galt is.
I read the end and heard a collective sigh of all my potential future friends go, whhhew, at least he’ll grow up to be just an asshole, and not a pseudo intellectual know it all prudish asshole.

Well Michael, I think you found a way to help with your insomnia. This book is sitting on my nightstand after an acquaintance told me it was “absolutely the best book” he has ever read. I had to force myself to read it… got about half way and gave up. There were too many times I would get to the end of a chapter and think “huh?’ If there is a story in here I could not find it, nor could I even find the hint of some cosmic “understanding” of the universe that it is suspected of having. I will be interested infinding out if you agree/disagree and what your take will be.

    Hi Michael

I’m know this isn’t the most appropriate place to inquire about a job posting you had on craigslist, but it seems to be the best way. It said you were looking for a personal asst. Are you still looking for one? If so I’d love to apply & explain more about myself. Here’s my email: Oldsashley87@yahoo.com.

    Thanks for your time
